Death of the Virgin by muradino

/ ©2009-2015 muradino
This is a PYROGRAPH, burned into birch panel, by manual PYROGRAPHY. 27 x 24 x 1 in
So : PYROGRAPHY - PYROGRAPHS (same as PHOTOGRAPHY - PHOTOGRAPHS) !!!
Basically it's the same good ol' woodburning, just taken to another level : different tools, different technique, different approach.
I'm using this "Sculpture & Crafts, Artisan Crafts, Woodworking" category to post my artwork, just because a "PYROGRAPHY" category is not yet created (hopefully it will be soon)...
This particular piece is a pyrographed reproduction of Caravaggio's oil on canvas "Death of the Virgin", 1606.

"It's mind-boggling to think that a master of pyrography like ~muradino is able to create such a beautiful, realistic masterpiece just by burning wood. The outcome is enough to leave anyone in awe." Death of the Virgin by ~muradino ( Suggested by Rosella-of-Daventry and Featured by KubusRubus )

Are you serious? You did this on wood? I can barely even carve a heart in a tree without messing up...and I use a knife! This is really beautiful, and extra kudos for the wood!

Wow. Looks like you've got pyrography mastered. You should do some scratchboard- it's the opposite idea of pyrography, but after seeing this, I think you could definitely do it!

mmm first of all i don't know if i really understood the definiton of pyrography I read , when the tool "touches" the wood, it leaves a dark color right, or you "burn" the entire board and then "scratch"... i have that doubt.
And of course i must say that the detail is amazing just amazing, the shades are soft, very beautiful work

I've never heard of this art form before. It's beautiful! I thought it was a painting because the shading is so perfect. Do you have a video demonstrating this technique?

Even if this wasn't burned on wood, it would be considered an excellent rendition of the original, the fact that it is burned onto wood, makes this piece that many steps above insane... I personally didn't think that such control could be used with those materials... I am amazed.

You, sir, are AMAZING! I love the shading and texture techniques you used :D
Our TechEd class once did some woodburning on some pieces of wood, but this piece is way beyond what we were doing.

Somewhere in the universe, Caravaggio is smoking a cigar nodding his head slowly saying "Bene. Bene..."

I would have never thought that you could get this kind of chiaroscuro with wood burning. Just beautiful.

I saw this and knew that it was a Caravaggio even though I don't recall seeing this particular painting, his style is so recognizable and I absolutely love the way you've rendered this painting in such a humble medium very appropriate for this scene!

Oh my gosh, yes! And I like burning those shiny advertisements they send in the mail and gallery invitations because the flames turn green. :P

Needless to say, I've nearly burned my house down once. :(
