Napoleon Crossing the Alps by muradino Napoleon Crossing the Alps by muradino
This is a PYROGRAPH, burned into lime/linden panel, by manual PYROGRAPHY. 32 x 24 x 0.5 in
So : PYROGRAPHY - PYROGRAPHS (same as PHOTOGRAPHY - PHOTOGRAPHS) !!!
Basically it's the same good ol' woodburning, just taken to another level : different tools, different technique, different approach.
I'm using this "Sculpture & Crafts, Artisan Crafts, Woodworking" category to post my artwork, just because a "PYROGRAPHY" category is not yet created (hopefully it will be soon)...
This particular piece is a pyrographed reproduction of Jaques-Louis-David's oil on canvas "Le Premier Consul franchissant les Alpes au col du Grand-Saint-Bernard", 1801.

The suggester said: "Pyrography is a much under appreciated art form. This piece is far and away the best pyrography on DA and it simply blows me away. If you are unfamiliar with pyrography it is the process of burning an image into wood (and occasionally other materials). Every patch of shading, every line has had to be carefully burnt until the wood reaches the right colour. Yet ~muradino makes Napoleon Crossing the Alps look like a print!" Stunning work, and the shading is so subtle. That takes great skill when pyrographing.

There's a lot of movement here and as a piece of history, it offers the fascination in that it captures his bravado and his perspective, so it's definitely interesting.

As far as the woodwork goes, it's well crafted.

That's some amazing burning. You make me glad I got a new computer so I can visit DA again! What pyro kit are you using? You have beautiful shading, especially in those delicate areas around the horse's muscles.

I think DA is starting to notice the pyrographers. Maybe we will get our own category soon.

Sorry, I've been away from art-ing for awhile. Sadly, I have no homepage except for DA. I don't really produce enough stuff to justify my own website anyway, especially since I've gotten into the faux money business. That stuff is way more time-consuming than the pyrography. At least with the pyrography stylus I felt under pressure to get a lot done before the barrel got too hot. There's nothing like burnt fingers to keep you motivated.
